Injury Level: C3/4
Injury Date: 7/19/2008

I am a retired police officer and was an avid motorcycle rider. I would travel on my motorcycle for recreation and to attend events.  On July 18, 2008 while traveling to a police motorcycle convention in Illinois, a careless driver was traveling down the entrance ramp onto an interstate in Kentucky.  I was in the left hand lane and the car came across both lanes and struck my motorcycle, causing it to crash into the median strip.  I was thrown off of the bike and landed on my head.

I spent three weeks in intensive care and awoke to find out that I had an incomplete C3/C4 spinal cord injury.   I was told by the doctors that I would be paralyzed from the neck down.  I was then transferred to Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte, where I underwent surgery to replace two shattered vertebrae in my neck with cadaver bones.

Since my injury I have been in the rehabilitation hospital twice.  I completed approximately five weeks of rehab each time. I was then discharged to my residence to begin my own rehab.   That is when I learned about the program at Race To Walk.

Since working in rehab, my gym, and the program at Race To Walk, I have regained some movement of my arms and legs. I have also been able to pull myself up and stand on my legs for a few minutes at a time.  I believe that if I continue with this physical program, I will be able to stand on my own and hopefully walk again.  This program has given me hope again.
