Program Overview
No one can guarantee that a person will walk, but as with the able-bodied population, individuals living with paralysis that are fit are more likely to live healthier and more productive lives. Exercise-based therapy (not to be confused with physical therapy) is the application of scientifically based exercise principles adapted to enhance the strength, endurance, and mobility of individuals with functional limitations or those requiring extended physical conditioning. The Race to Walk program is designed to compliment traditional hospital/clinic-based therapies
After a debilitating injury, the dysfunctional nervous system needs time to heal and will require retraining. Whether your injury is new or you've had it for years, starting an intensive exercise program now can avoid or reverse "learned non-use" in affected muscle groups. Muscles atrophy and neural circuits turn off with disuse. Building and maintaining muscle mass keeps tissues in paralyzed limbs healthy.
Nationally certified Fitness Trainers design individualized programs (utilizing established exercise science principals and substantiated techniques) to achieve optimum fitness. Exercises are implemented to build on the existing level of motor activity and encourage motor responses in previously thought non-functioning muscles. The Exercise Therapist determines the appropriate evaluation tools and interventions necessary to establish, in collaboration with the client, a goal-specific treatment plan consisting of several modalities. Together we will work on re-establishing motor pathways and/or strengthening existing signals.
Leading neurologists are now advocating intensive exercise programs for people with paralysis. Our training system is designed to incrementally reeducate the damaged nervous system with the goal of regained movement, increased independence, and ultimately improving the lives of those living with paralysis.
The pursuit of increased function is a marathon, requiring a lifetime commitment to fitness and wellbeing. Currently there are no magical cures for SCI patients. However, with dedication and hard work, together we can work towards maximizing your potential.
